Sky Zhao noticed his passion for speed when he first arrived in New Zealand shore back in 2002. The first type of racing Sky got into was drag racing, back in 2003 drag racing was getting huge in NZ, attending a lot of big drag events, he was heavily involved within the motorsport.
Late 2004, Sky then discovered track racing and was instantly attracted to it because it involved more driver skills. In the meanwhile in 2005, he formed his way to build performace cars, taking out awards at the Auto Salon car show in 2005 and 2006 (Best JDM Style) and 2007 (Best Brake engineering). Sky’s passion has exceeded beyond his show winning cars with him learning in an array of cars from Nissan Skyline’s, S14’s ,Honda Civic’s ,Integra’s and many more. Sky took his track driving skills to the next level where he attended many various track days over NZ.
After that, Sky engulfed himself within the go kart scene to progress his racing skills, racing in the international class Rota MAX, which is one of the fastest go kart classes, he learned the fundamentals of racing and kart set up all over again but this time in more depth. After this he developed his precision driving skills to ascertain a wider depth in racing knowledge.
Sky began his involvement with drifting in 2008. After developing his 2nd s14, he attended many drifting events such as D2NZ, Driftopia and various private track days. With the skills in hand, he picked up drifting pretty quickly.Competing in the Auckland Skid Pad Championship at Waikaraka Speedway,Sky grabed the 1st place in the modified class. By end of 2008, he was given an opportunity to compete in the 2009 D1NZ Rookie Championship series, he then worked very hard with Smales Auto to get their R33 Skyline D1 Car ready for the D1NZ Championship. After whole year of competing and hard working, Sky placed 9th out of 33 teams and is now qualified for the 2010 D1NZ Championship Series – The pinnacle of NZ Drift. At the 2009 D1NZ award dinner, Sky pick up Best Presented Vehicle award and nominated for Most Improved Driver and Best Engine Bay.
